Located on the western side of the island, in Westpunt, Curacao, is the best restaurant on the entire island, Sol Food. There isn’t much located in Westpunt in general–there are a few restaurants, a couple hotels, a small convenience store and not much else besides beautiful nature. This area of the island is all about nature and outdoor activity, such as hiking, biking, diving, snorkeling, cliff jumping and exploring. Sol Food is a small restaurant that is basically in the backyard of a house owned by Sunshine and David. It can be a little tricky to find, so going by during the day helps get your bearings. There are numerous beaches nearby as well as some of the best beaches in the Caribbean.

The restaurant’s seating is situated out back on the patio and some tables overlook the ocean in a perfect spot to watch the sunset. It’s a good idea to make reservations because the restaurant can fill up quick in the evenings. If you don’t get a reservation or decide to show up on a whim, you will be seated at one of the community tables, which can actually turn into a fun situation. Everyone there is so friendly, we ended up leaving the community table with a few friends. Sol Food is popular with both locals and visitors, so you are bound to find interesting conversation.

Sol Food is only open weekends, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, for both lunch and dinner. The menu changes weekly, but the pizza seems to remain a constant, and it’s delicious and affordable as well. Compared to most of the restaurants on the island, Sol Food is fairly budget friend, and we found it to be the best food out of any of the restaurants as well. Some examples of the other menu items are burgers, steaks, fresh fish and the like.

Sunshine is a great host and so friendly. She has a fairly large packet with a lot of detailed information about practical information and fun activities in the area. We referenced the guide numerous times and found some great insight to the island. Her husband David is really into mountain biking and they will take you out on the trails or provide you with trail information if you want to go at it alone. As well as mountain biking tours, they will guide you in snorkeling or diving as well. They both seem to have a great love for the island and a vast amount of information and tips they are willing to share–it makes for a warm welcome to the far side of the island.

If you are looking for a place to stay, you can also rent their apartment room in the house with views overlooking the ocean and the mountains. The apartment is located on the second floor of the house and is around 1,800 sq ft. It sleeps 6+ people and runs around $200 per night and they have kayaks and mountain bikes. You will need a car to get to this area of the island, but we would fully recommend venturing here if you get the chance.
